The base model was not available for testing at launch, but the turbocharged engine and DCT take the compact truck to 60 mph in about seven seconds, which means it has little trouble getting up to speed on the highway. ![]() Both engines use an eight-speed automatic transmission, but the turbo’s double-clutch automatic transmission (DCT) has sharper responses. The base model makes 191 horsepower, and the optional turbocharged unit delivers a punchy 281. Priced from about $25,000 to $41,000, the new Santa Cruz comes offers a front- or all-wheel driveline and a pair of 2.5-liter four-cylinder engines. Those are admittedly small-ish surfboards, but the Santa Cruz’s bed is well outfitted to accommodate all kinds of cargo and lifestyle adventure gear. It can haul a dozen four-by-eight sheets of plywood and is rated to tow 5,000-pound trailers when equipped with the optional turbocharged engine That’s the same tow rating as Honda’s Ridgeline. The Santa Cruz is fun to drive and has room for five. The Santa Cruz will give urban dwellers access to a pickup that is compact enough to navigate tight city quarters and capable enough to haul tents, mountain bikes and surfboards out of town for adventurous weekend jaunts.
